Title:
Interaction of Polyvinylpyrrolidone with the Ions of Inorganic Salts in Aqueous Solution
Abstract:
The interaction of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) with the ions of inorganic salts in aqueous and in methanolic solutions has been studied by NMR on the 127I, 81Br, 35Cl, 41K, 23Na, and 14N nuclei.Bonding of the anions to the PVP is observed in aqueous solutions. The equilibrium constant of this reaction decreases in the anion sequence SCN(-), I(-), Br(-), NO3(-), Cl(-).Bonding of the PVP with the Na(+) and K(+) counter-ions is not observed. In methanolic solutions the preferential bonding of the anions to the PVP does not take place. We conclude that the bonding of the anions to the PVP is caused by molecules of water hydrated by the polymer, which can act as a binding link between the units of the PVP chain and the anions because of the presence of two donor hydrogen bonds.
